Working On The Frontline Of Brand Protection
Max Roele, Intelligence Analyst at Corsearch, shares his experience of a career in Brand Protection.
We hope you’ve heard by now that TrademarkNow has been acquired by Corsearch! We’re excited because in addition to providing even faster, comprehensive trademark search and watch services, we’re now part of an industry-leading brand protection provider. For the first time, we’ll be able to offer anti-counterfeiting solutions, gray trade monitoring, anti-piracy services, and more, to our law firm and brand clients — all as part of one integrated service.
Why is this an invaluable integrated service solution for trademark owners? Because the threats to brand equity and consumer safety from counterfeiting, piracy, and IP infringement are significant and growing. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the trade in counterfeit and pirated goods across all industries is now at 3.3% of world trade and rising. Research has also shown that counterfeiting rings are integrally linked to serious organized crime networks perpetrating offenses from terrorism to narcotics.
The increasing speed and breadth of the digital age means that protecting brands from IP crime is a 24/7, always-on, task. Corsearch’s global team of Brand Protection and Intelligence Analysts work hard to keep a vigilant watch over client’s trademarks, goodwill and reputation, but their roles are not widely discussed. To find out more about the life of an Intelligence Analyst, I caught up with Max Roele.

Interview with Max Roele
1. How and why did you end up at Corsearch?
Coincidence really! I came from the field of e-discovery, where I collected evidence of financial crime before handing it off to investigators and attorneys.
I was looking for more involvement in the investigative process, while still combining this with some technical aspects as I'm also interested in cyber security.
When I started looking, Corsearch had posted a vacancy for an Intelligence Analyst. At the time it was still Pointer (acquired by Corsearch in 2020) and their website showed pictures of dogs in the office. And now here I am!
2. What does a typical day at Corsearch look like for you?
What I work on really depends on what the client's goals and priorities are. As a result, my activities are very diverse.
Of course, the focus is on investigating suspicious sellers to provide my clients with actionable intelligence that will help them shutdown counterfeiters.
Together with my team lead, I also set up the strategies for my clients.
One day, I might be investigating a counterfeiter's social media profiles, a network of scam domains pretending to be a large brand's customer service, or a client's employee suspected of selling stolen goods on eBay.
The next day, my work may be much more focused on data enrichment and analysis, market research, or making test purchases.
In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic I collected and investigated domains that were offering illegal or falsified medicines, fake face masks, and test kits. These were reported to authorities in the EU and US.
3. What would you say most motivates you to do what you do?
Doing the right thing - fighting crime! The work itself is fun as you're constantly solving puzzles.
If you can't find what you're looking for, you have to try it in countless different ways, while working under a time limit.
4. What’s next for you in your work? What are you looking forward to?
I would like to keep investigating and to share knowledge about Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) - perhaps as a trainer.
